The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida
by Shehan Karunatilaka
this book deserves every bit of praise it has gotten and more.
Shehan Karunatilaka’s writing is engrossing, the flair of his story telling is like none other I’ve read before. The story, characters and way the book is written are all fabulous as standalones but together they strike you with such power and depth that it’s unimaginable. I’d highly recommend this book to everyone, I read it months ago and still think of it often, it’s worth five stars and many more.
i found this book so interesting. the look into sri lankan politics, queerness, war, death, corruption, addiction and so much more was fascinating and was done so well. Im not completly sure what to say because even days later i don’t know what to say even though i really enjoyed it so i’ll leave some quotes i was collecting below. They aren’t really spoilers just things that stuck with me
- [ ] “Evil is not what we should fear. Creatures with power acting in their own self interest: that is what should make us shudder.”
- [ ] “Though, as every gambler knows, the biggest killer in this godless universe is the random roll of the dice. Plain stinking jungle variety bad luck. The thing that gets us all.”
- [ ] “No one asks for anything. No one asks to be born poor, no one asks for disease, no one asks to be born queer.”
- [ ] “Is god unable to stop evil? Or unwilling?”
- [ ] “All stories are recycled and all stories are unfair. Many get luck, and many get misery. Many are born to homes with books, many grow up on the swamps of war. In the end, all become dust. All stores conclude with a fade to black.”
- [ ] “‘We send pawns to kill kings. But bad kings get replaced by worse kings, and more pawns get sent to die’”
- [ ] “Who do you blame for this mess? Was it the colonials who screwed us for centuries? Or the superpowers that are screwing us now?”
- [ ] “‘It’s because we have just the right amount of education to understand that the world is cruel.’ says the schoolgirl’And just enough corruption and inequality to feel powerless against it.”
