Bonjour tristesse by Françoise Sagan

3.0

I'll applaud this book for the hazy, summer-afternoon feel it brilliantly evoked, I felt transported to the French countryside through Francoise's writing. I enjoyed the critique on the exploitation of youth and beauty, and the stylized way in which it was written. It felt like Francoise herself was grieving the trauma of youth while still being young.

I think it really benefited from its short length and though the characters were compelling and the plot interesting, I don't really think it had much of a point except the 'damaged, young, rich and beautiful doing damaged young, rich and beautiful things.' It was still nicely written, and I can't quite pinpoint it's criticizing how vapid the characters are, or romanticizing it.

I do appreciate the boldness of 18-year-old Francoise scandalizing French society when it came out.
