Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

5.0

Very long, but very well written dive into super dysfunctional small town Appalachia and the grip that the opioid crisis has on it. Barbara's main character Demon Copperhead never had a fighting chance but still figures out how to make it in life. His character has amazing self awareness and while this is a depressing saga of poverty and drug addiction, the plot was quick moving and you never give up on the main character. His sister via adoption, Angus, was by far my favorite character but probably because I see a lot of myself in her: eyes on the prize, keeping to the straight and narrow despite everything around her melting down. I was happy with the ending too! I was continually amazed by Barbara's language and being about to colorfully and succinctly describe the ongoing chaos in Lee County - HOW DID SHE CAPTURE IT JUST SO? I switched to the audiobook halfway through, narrator Charlie Thurston was an EXCELLENT choice for the voice.
