Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

3.0

A retelling of the Norse myths by fiction author Neil Gaiman.

I've read a fair number of collections of fairytales, fables, myths, and folktales over the years, and this is just...what. I'm not really sure what the author was going for here. I've been through a bunch of the Old Norse sagas and both Eddas, and while I'm no expert, the tales here sound off, as though massive sections of the stories were removed or toned down for a younger audience. The voices sound like the Marvel film characters half the time, and half like the characters from Sandman, which I suppose might be expected, but it's jarring to the ear whenever modern, quippy dialogue shows up.

I can't recommend this. It wasn't terrible, but it's a handful of thin, inconsistently modernized tales, and feels like a Disney version of something rather more grim and awesome.
