White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky
3.5

I was trying to see what the hype was about and it's perhaps that I read Madonna In a Fur Coat first that this pales in comparison, regardless of the fact that White Nights was published first. I also acknowledge that White Nights is a short story while Madonna In a Fur Coat is a whole novel so the degree of how fleshed out the characters are is going to be different.

Both books have similar themes and fairly comparable. A reclusive man changes his views on the world upon meeting a remarkable woman. He projects his dreams and hopes unto this woman and ends up being dejected as a result, inspite his good intentions.

But more than that it's also a tragic story of love and friendship that did not meet where it was supposed to, of a chance encounter between two people who longs for the same thing—companionship—but have different expectations of what that means to each other.
