I had put off reading this book for a long time because I thought it would be too depressing.

There are so many layers to this book and it's hard to pinpoint exactly how to describe it. It is dark as well as hopeful. It's a book about identity, agency, mental illness, and much more.

The Bell Jar is as liberating as it is confining.

It is told in the first person by Esther, who is spiraling into mental illness. She is a strong, funny character. It is set in the 1950s where women do not have much of their own identity. They are supposed to get married and have children and Esther does not want this. Esther struggles between who she thinks others want her to be and who she really is.

I would highly recommend this book.
