Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado

4.0

4.5 stars, really. Some of the stories are amazing and weird and deeply uncomfortable, scary, and/or sad. Stay with you and make you think. Others don't quite hit the mark. As one reviewer commented, if this was art it would be an abstract painting. Or maybe a symbolist painting. The stories have themes of the pressure women have not to take up space, thought, opinion, action. Sex, violence, mental illness, and the difference between the inner lived experience and outward expression are all to be found here. Not for the faint of heart, this is an arresting work of art.
