A Lady in Attendance by Rachel Fordham
5.0

This is my 4th book by Rachel Fordham and I have loved every one! Here’s why-

• Each one is so unique. The characters aren’t your typical main characters - they’re flawed both in physical beauty (by the world’s standards, anyways) and in character. Each book is about a lesser known subject - in this book it’s early dentistry and a “lady in attendance”. I learned something about history and the culture from long ago with each book.

• Each story has such a tenderness to it. The romance is so sweet and believable. I love that!

I loved the main character’s names in this one. Hazel is the name of both of my grandmothers (although my maternal one went by her middle name) and therefore has a special place in my heart! And Gilbert reminds me of none other than Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables (one of my very favorite books!).

And finally, the most important part of this story - redemption and inner beauty. “Only God knows our true beauty.” -

• Redemption - This story reminds us that no matter how bad our past is, no matter the mistakes we’ve made that cause us so much shame and regret, there is hope for redemption. And it’s God who makes it so. He can take the ashes of our ruined lives and make something beautiful if we allow Him.

• Inner Beauty - Ina’s facial “flaw” caused a lot of the people around her to make her feel that she was less, that she was hopeless - until she meets someone who doesn’t “see” her flaw and instead sees her inner beauty. Isn’t that how God loves us?

So, yes, I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Christian/clean fiction. There’s enough smut in this world - we need to read stories like this one that uplift and make our hearts sigh with contentment!
