We Are Not from Here by Jenny Torres Sanchez
5.0

This book is a MUST READ. Remember a few years back all that controversy over American Dirt? Skip American Dirt. If you want to read a fictional book that is a more accurate portrayal of the current immigrant experience from Latin America, read this book instead.

We are Not From Here features three unaccompanied minors who travel from Guatemala to the United States on La Bestia, the freight train that many migrants take to get to the US.

This story is heart wrenching. I actually listened to it on audio book on my commute to work for two weeks. I am positive I cried almost every day to and from work. I'm working at a new school this year, so I'm hoping some of my new colleagues don't have any questions as to why I was red-eyed and full of snot when I pulled into the parking lot each morning. It's this book. It wrecked me, as they say.

I appreciate the alternating narrative viewpoints in each chapter. I feel like it helped the story move forward and added a fullness to the experience of the migrant journey for unaccompanied minors.

Recommend this one to the youth in your life and to anyone who needs help empathizing with the immigrant experience. You cannot NOT empathize with Pequena, Pulga, and Chico.
