calypsomarie 's review for:
Wild
by Cheryl Strayed
I loved this book. It reminded me of Tracks, about a girl called Robyn Davidson who hikes across Australia with her dog and two camels.
I wish people would be kinder to Cheryl Strayed. I don't understand why everyone writes reviews where they complain about how whiny she is, or how selfish, or how unprepared she was. Anyone who has ever been on a multi-day hike that lasted longer than a week can tell you that EVERYONE is unprepared and clueless when they begin. EVERYONE feels like Cheryl Stayed, and makes mistakes, and then we all learn from them. You don't learn how to do this by reading hiking books.
I also think we should remember that Cheryl Strayed was a real person, who made mistakes in her life, but she learnt from them and grew into a generous, kind person who learnt to hurt people less. So I wish people would stop picking on her. She made stupid decisions, but who doesn't when they are in their early twenties? I was told by several people that the book was well written but I'd find the main character annoying, but I liked Cheryl Strayed. I'd read this again. If you liked it, please read Tracks.
Here's to hiking the PCT one day!!
