“That I have lived and killed and lived again in the name of a man who does not deserve it because I wanted so badly to be beloved. But only one person in all my lives has ever loved me, and he does not wear a crown.”

What an absolutely beautiful and tragic story. In just 30 pages, Alix E. Harrow has written a tale that will rip your heart out and long for more. How often do you wish you could go back in time and watch over your innocent younger self, guiding them, warning them? And what lengths would you go to just to feel loved? We are constantly feeling the pain and suffering our dying girl turned warrior is feeling, all of her wounds become our wounds and her desperation for love becomes ours as well, even as we beg her stop. We watch as she destroys herself for a man who will never love her, who only views her as a weapon that will help him achieve power. It isn’t until she discovers that love has always been beside her, in every lifetime, that she decides to live for herself.

“This time, when I push my face into the pool, when the water fills my mouth and floods my lungs, I am smiling. They will never sing my name.”
