Fitzgerald was Postmodern in his style and Modern in his subject, and this is likely why he was mostly out of print by the time of his death. It's strange to read a book that's coming up on a hundred years old and see the same sorts of problems I worry about –the struggle between the ambition to be great and the desire to be good, the purpose of art in the "real" world– reflected back.
