It's Real Life: An Alternate History of The Beatles by Paul Levinson
4.0
It’s 1976, and New York classic rock DJ Pete Fornatale accidentally finds himself in an alternate universe in which John Lennon has been murdered (yes, that's correct—in Fornatale's universe Lennon is alive and well). Once Fornatale determines that it is actually real and he's not crazy, he sets out to A) first return to his universe where Lennon is alive and the Beatles are still together, B) warn Lennon in his correct universe of the possible looming danger, and C) find a way back to the alternate universe and find out more about Lennon’s assassin.
Fornatale enlists the help of a Fordham professor, a young filmmaker, an actress, and a strange woman who may know more about moving between universes (not to mention time travel) than she is letting on. The novel has a lot of fun bits about what the Beatles would have done if things had been different, other famous rock stars make cameos, and Fornatale is a likeable character. There is much traveling between the multiple universes—and even some discussion of time travel—but the author keeps it clear (mostly by having the characters themselves trying to keep it straight), so it never gets confusing. It's a real page turner because you have to see what happens at the end.
Turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream.
