Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
5.0
adventurous dark emotional funny mysterious fast-paced

Although I knew the story - more or less - of Peter Pan from reading abridged versions as a child and of course Disney, I had never read the original! I’m so happy I did because I now realise that this not only a children’s book but a fantastic adventure book for adults too, especially those of us who are still children at heart and wish we could yet fly ☺️

I enjoyed Barrie’s classic for its story - the adventures, characters and his deep understanding of how children think and behave! Also, for his easy flowing narrative and authentic characterisations. Peter, Hook, Tinker Bell, the Darlings and the Lost Boys are all wonderfully three dimensional! I especially loved the last chapter in which we learn about the future and what it means for everyone involved. That too stays true to form. I found that there is an authorised sequel called Peter in Scarlet by Geraldine McCaughrean, but I’m not particularly keen on reading it, at least not immediately. For now I prefer to stay in the magical Neverland of Barrie’s imagination, enjoying the rollicking adventures and listening for the crocodile’s ticking!

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Tim Curry on Storytel, while reading from the Project Gutenberg book - Peter & Wendy which had the charming original illustrations. An absolutely delightful reading experience ❤️
