A Room With a View by E.M. Forster
3.0

*3 and a half*

I am confused to say the least. This one was a roller coaster(spelt right???)...but not an obvious one.

Everytime I thought I knew what was going to happen, everytime I thought something happy was going to happen, it always went the other way. Right to the end. I will say that the final chapter is my favourite, it is a rare thing to see the future in such novels. But even that is tainted by the fact her beloved family never came to terms with her decision. But understandable since Lucy was terrible to them towards the end. Whether I like any of the characters is a question mark...other than Mr Emerson and Freddy.

However, after accepting that I did actually enjoy the book, despite all the annoyingly questionable decisions made by our heroine, I get to the dreaded appendix....The future of the characters envisioned by the author himself ruined it considerably for me. Namely, in regards to the beloved house and George's surprising love of violence and cheating on Lucy during his absence. It ruins the romance for me. They never seemed to settle, to find a happy place. But Mr Emerson was happy so I guess that makes it okay...

Rant over. So other than the plot decisions that thoroughly upset me and made me rethink everything, the writing itself is poetic and enlightening. I've learnt something about reality whether I wanted to or not.

Ps we will zoom past the morbid reference to a ww3 in the appendix...*eep*
