Exit, Pursued by a Bear
by E.K. Johnston
Exit, Pursued by a Bear is a story that makes you sympathise, yet also admire the strength of the protagonist, Hermione Winters. Hermione is the star co-captain of her school's cheerleading team. She is committed to her cheer career and is driven and passionate. Everything looks bright for her - until she was drugged and raped at a cheer camp. With no memory of what happened, but being haunted by triggers of the traumatising incident, Hermione tries to move on with a strong support system, and to ultimately make decisions for herself after having one very important choice taken away from her. The whole story was well-written and engaging, and I liked the characterisation of Hermione's support system. The story is frank and straightforward, with no diversions from the main plot and was a delight to read. Definitely one of the best Young Adult books of the year.
