Do a Powerbomb by Daniel Warren Johnson

5.0

DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON ADDS ANOTHER BANGER TO HIS CATALOG WITH THIS AWESOME LIMITED SERIES!

What better way to start a new year off than reading some work from a creator who is possibly the most creative in the biz right now. DWJ blesses us with another dynamic, balls to the wall story. ‘Do a Powerbomb’ is a limited series centered around a character named Lona. Lona is the daughter of a legendary pro-wrestler by the name of Yua Steelrose. After a hyped up match between Yua and her biggest rival, Cobrasun, goes wrong, Yua is accidentally killed in the ring. Lona sees her mothers unconscious body and is scared by her unmoving and cold appearance. 10 years go by and we see Lona trying to take up her mother’s legacy and try to become a pro-wrestler herself. Her only problem is she can’t find a trainer that’ll actually take her under their wing. Her father also doesn’t want her to follow in her mother’s footsteps as he’s afraid she’ll end up like her. Lona refuses and continues on her own path. After walking the streets during the night Lona is approached by a strange man who reveals to her that he is a Necromancer. He’s a very powerful being who also happens to be obsessed with pro-wrestling. He offers Lona to join his tag team Deathlyfe tournament, where the winner will get the opportunity to bring back someone near and dear to them from the dead. Lona instantly agrees and now just needs to find a tag team partner. She decides to find the man who accidentally killed her mother and was also her biggest match up, Cobrasun. Cobrasun is still angry with himself for that night, and after a bit of convincing, agrees to join Lona in the tournament. Together they become Sun and Steel and must go against other pro-wrestlers from other worlds across time and space. Both with one goal in mind, to bring back Yua Steelrose.

Daniel Warren Johnson oh how I love thee! Once again DWJ is providing story, writing, and artwork in another phenomenal series of his. Johnson said his inspiration for this story came to him a few years ago when his daughter was born. He found himself watching pro-wrestling as he tried to put his kiddo to bed. He fell in love with the sport and that’s how we got this. You can tell Johnson is passionate about the topic due to the passion he leaves on page. Both with the writing and artwork. Sure the story is very *out* there, but the characters he writes are still very much grounded and show real emotion. You feel the pain these people are going through and the lengths they’re willing to take to make that pain go away. Leave it to DWJ to get me tearing up in the first couple pages but also getting hyped asf on the next issue! There’s crazy moments in this book that had me WTFing out loud all throughout reading it. Moments that were epic and badass and moments that were pulling at my heartstrings. Even characters that were more in the background got some small attention that made the overall read feel important and well thought out. It’s great in action yes, but DWJ’s takes on grief and how one deals with it, was super beautiful and is shown really well with the ending of the series. The read is a constant ‘I did not expect this’ kind of read and I think that just shines on how creative DWJ is.

Then you add his top notch, S-tier, GOAT LIKE, artwork and you got a series that should be admired by everyone! Once again I find myself using words like, dynamic, epic, badass, and enthralling. Johnson’s ability to display the movement around the fights feels so kinetic. As corny as it sounds, you almost find yourself there in the crowd cheering for Sun and Steel, witnessing some of the craziest displays of the sport that is pro-wrestling. You can hear the unique and satisfying sound of the ring as the wrestlers move around and slam against it. The lights look bright and are captured in amazing fashion when he show’s an epic angle of the wrestlers flying through the air. The crowd is loud and your eyes can barely keep up as they go from rope to rope. It’s all just WOW. Add the captivating colors from long time collaborator Mike Spicer, and you have the cherry on top to Johnson’s work.

Overall; I love love love this read and it just continues to show me why Dainel Warren Johnson is the best in the game right now. His creative stories only get better and his artwork is some of the best in technique and look alone! Even if you’re not a fan of pro-wrestling, give this a try. It’s a fun thrill ride that shines as an example that not *everything* has been done, and we are witnessing one of the best to ever do it in the comic book industry.
