The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
2.0

The Glass Castle relates extraordinary events in the life of Walls which at some point sound simply unbelievable, but that's not my biggest gripe. While reading this book I was reminded of a little kid, who's been asked to keep a secret but can't hold it in her tummy anymore and ends up prattling it off to strangers eventually, without pausing for breath. That's exactly how The Glass Castle reads, at an unnatural speed and without any breaks to let the author's feeling, thoughts, or emotions creep into the narration.

She has had a deplorable childhood, what with an alcoholic father and a manic depressive mother for parents and has spent most of it in poverty and then out of the blue, she's successful and living on Park Avenue! How did THAT happen? We're not told and instead are expected to simply cheer her for being such a hero. It would have been a good memoir if she/they hadn't decided to censor a major part of her life, the part that is so vital to the narration.
