Kill Your Darlings by L.E. Harper

1.0

I DNFed this after chapter four. I did not enjoy the author's writing style, and I'm not a huge fan of authors who mock the genre they're writing, it always feels very unprofessional and a tad childish. The book jumps straight into the story without any introduction or lead up to the main character, which made me feel like I was thrown in the deep end without any context.

I picked up Kill Your Darlings for the mental health representation, and if I'm being honest, I felt that this was more akin to an autobiography than a fantasy novel with representation. The plot of the book felt a little too close to the author's own personal circumstances which are introduced to the reader in an author's note before the book begins. In the note the author mentions that her journey may not relate to others, which is fair enough, however, the point of writing a fictional book with representation is so that others can relate. I just felt that this book was a cathartic exercise for the author more than a book for other people.

At one point the main character explains to characters what a Mary Sue is and how as the author she made their lives' hell so that her main character wasn't a Mary Sue. That is more than a little ironic since this book appears to be a Mary Sue novel.
