i hate giving 5 stars out but holy shit.
people told me they disliked this book because the metaphors and language were overly convoluted, but i just think they didn't put enough effort into reading it. vuong is a poet and is so raw yet deliberate with his words- it breaks my heart that people are so critical of his work without truly trying to understand it. it takes some time to get through, but it was so worth it to me. maybe i'm biased as a gay first gen immigrant asian with a rocky relationship with my mother and relate too much to the content to be a reliable reference, but it's a must-read in my book.
