Farewell, My Lovely by Raymond Chandler

4.0

This was a really excellent mystery, and captures some of the best highlights of how a hard-boiled detective novel can be written. (Sure, it's a style that is easy to parody, but Chandler uses it very effectively in this book.) The characters are all well-done, so that even the minor characters that we see for a few moments and never again are alive enough to come off the page. The wording still flashes with life and surprise. The mystery is twisted and fulfills my unexpectations. I really enjoyed this book... even more than "The Big Sleep."
