Honestly, just a masterpiece. Hard to put down. I'm not generally one for Victorian era literature with all the pomp and circumstance. I find the social status stuff abhorrent and entirely counter to my autistic sensibilities, particularly when they are romanticized. However, Dunn portrays these social gatherings as cutthroat acts of survival in a cruel, unforgiving world. A framing device that I find quite fascinating.
This book is fundamentally about how women have had to stem their desires and serve the whims of the misogynistic men that wield power over them as well as the power women may wield when they allow themselves to reconnect with their desires and live for themselves. A truth that is only slightly less real today than it would have been in the late 19th century. If you are a bi woman who has ever felt unfairly tied down by your man, you will most certainly relate to this book. Lesbians will also probably enjoy despite the clearly bisexual protagonist.
