The world building is rich. The magic system is tied to the lunar & tidal alignment. The moon phase and tide you were born on determines your magic. However, eclipse magic is the most powerful and is available year round instead of only during the moon phase. Non eclipse born can do a procedure called bloodletting which lets you use magic outside of the moon phase you were born on. There are various magic schools and the two main characters go to Aldryn College.
At Aldryn, there are 2 secret societies tied to the tides, which are the old gods. 1 society is using eclipse born for synth magic which is where systematic oppression comes into play. They are also hiding that a collapse makes you be on the peak of your magic on purpose to control the society
While it is set around finding the truth behind Romie, Emory's friend and Baz's sisters death, you never really get a good answer.
