I was curious about this since it's Ali Smith debut and, well, I feel like you can tell. Having read a lot of her more recent stuff, I feel her experimental prose lost me more easily in this, whereas that is usually a big draw for me. I liked how there were seeds of themes or subjects she commonly has in her other work, and it was interesting reading it while knowing how she explored these further. Some common threads: an inquisitive child POV, lesbian relationships, the power of/love of art, women daring to live differently than society perscribes, and the books structure being two halves related and intertwined but yet distinct stories.

There were many parts I really enjoyed. My rating is lower as there were also parts that I found harder to keep my focus on - perhaps partly due to a lack of awareness of Scottish culture and context of the time. I'll give it some time and then reread, as I'm curious how the second half (Ash POV) will give add layers to the first half (Amy & Kate POV).
