I really, really loved Ayana Mathis’s first book- Twelve Tribes of Hattie. I’m not sure if it’s because I didn’t love the characters or if the plot felt slow to me, but I had a harder time getting through this one. Her writing is still beautiful though, and I love the cadence and quality of her prose.
