Kasia has no problem stepping up and being the person she and her mother need in order to get by. It is obvious that her mom doesn’t deserve her and never does. We get a taste of what kinda “man” kasia is when she has to square up with Joe, who is obviously a punk. Joe is insignificant beyond this demonstration. We get to the part where Kasia meets the frustratingly beautiful and nonchalant Sophia. A simple look sets everything in motion. A woman who knows meets a woman who doesn’t know but has always wanted to know but is afraid to know. But how is she going to find out without being found out. Because if she finds out then she will be found out and she has big responsibilities.

When an opportunity arises for vengeance or happily ever after choices are made.

Are there plot holes, sure. Little ones, you hardly even notice they are there. Maybe if we are lucky we will get a second book in the series in which some of these things will be addressed.
