But a cavernous space had been hallowed out in her heart over the years, and his words echoed there beside older ones: that she wasn’t worth it; that she was too difficult for anyone to bother with. An orphan who was too mouthy. A solider with only one friend. A Lightweaver who could barely master the basics. A Lachis’ka who was too coarse-mannered. And now a bride who would never be loved.

You want a REAL enemies to lovers here it is. I’m talking there’s actually hate between them and they try to kill each other more than once. And the slow burn is intoxicating. Will they, won’t they? The push and pull of both of their emotions as they realize the feelings they have, especially the main character as she juggles her duty to her country vs her heart. The writing definitely includes a big vocabulary, it threw me off with how many big words there are but I got use to it. The characters and their interactions are definitely more of the focus point compared to the plot. Their chemistry is undeniable and I loved reading every second. It seems to me that most bad reviews picked this book up because of a fanfic the author made and seem disappointed with this as it fell short compared to said fanfic but as someone who had no idea about any of that I am glad I started this read without any prior knowledge as it allowed me to enjoy the book more without making comparisons. Overall, my first 5 star read and I can’t wait to read the next book!
