Red Sister by Mark Lawrence
4.0

Mark Lawrence has a talent for writing first lines that demand you keep reading. I've seen it in all his books so far.

Anyway, Red Sister, the martial sisters of the Sweet Mercy, follows Nona, a child who has been whisked away from a sentence of beheading, to join a convent... of deadly nuns you don't want to mess with.

As well as prayers, discipline, and patience, these young girls will learn to fight with fist and blade, or weild powerful magics.

I go could go on more about the world, but that will take a while. There is a rich world to discover here, a lot of world building that has me wanting to explore further.

Plot wise, it can be a little slow. It's a coming of age story, relationships between characters established, and lots of setup for the next two books.

I loved getting to know all the characters, and so looking forward to the next book. The packing didn't speed up until the last 20%, but boy did it speed up, AND THAT EPILOGUE!?

Only reason it's not 5 stars is because I personally feel this trilogy should be one book. I don't think the story here is self contained, and it's like I got half the story, and the other half are in the next two books.
