Neon Gods

**Spoilers**
This was an alright book. That's it, simply alright. In my opinion, it was missing...something. I can't quite place it, but there wasn't much of an actual story involved. It was basically "lost woman, found, fall-in-love, overcome odds" with no story building in-between.
I thought this would be a sexy world-building series, and so far I've been let down. The seggsy scenes were good, but even as a basic smut series it's a let-down.
There are a few aspects I can appreciate.
While leaning heavily on those details, I just feel that there is so much more of the original lore that could have lent a hand in writing out the start of this series. While not a total disappointment, it was a major let-down. I'll be giving book #2 a try (after I've cleansed my palette a bit) in hopes that it can somewhat redeem my opinion of this series.

We're told that the people controlling the city are LIKE Gods( i.e. Aphrodite, Demeter, Zeus, etc), but don't explain much past that, aside from them being "chosen" to become the /next/ Zeus, Demeter, etc. No explanation on HOW they're chosen, when they're chosen, if their children are born/named with the names of the children of the Gods or if their children's names are changed once they've been chosen, etc. I could continue to go on.There are a few aspects I can appreciate.

I did appreciate how the original lore was followed to some extent. I.e. Persephone falling in-love with Hades, brining in Cerberus, Demeter demanding 6 appearances across the River Styx by Hades, details like these. While leaning heavily on those details, I just feel that there is so much more of the original lore that could have lent a hand in writing out the start of this series.
