Before Your Memory Fades by Toshikazu Kawaguchi

3.0

This one was a little different than the others. It’s set in a different cafe in a different city in Japan with a set of new characters. It also had some old characters in it which added to its charm and familiarity.

The writing was pretty great like the other ones. There were some beautiful passages that truly resonated with me and allowed me a deeper insight into the characters. I still feel like some of the emotional impact is lost in having these translated from Japanese to English, which I felt in all the others. Some things just didn’t hit right and I felt could’ve been drawn out and described a little more to garner more emotion from the reader.

I enjoyed the set of new characters where some situations were similar to others in the series, but they all have a unique sort of twist. I’m glad we got to read more about characters we already met, and we got to see the ending for some new characters.

It was a little confusing having a new setting and some new sort of ideas come into play in this novel. It took a little bit of adjusting and I felt it could’ve been explained and explore more in depth.

Overall, I do really enjoy the concept of the time-travelling cafe and it’s always nice return to a familiar world.
