Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko

5.0

Jordan Ifueko has an amazing ability to tell a story through every word used on the paper. I'm not even joking. Raybearer takes my least favourite "Chosen One" tropes and makes it work in the most beautiful way possible.

While the cast is considered really big, there is a focus on the main five or six characters, that doesn't leave you questioning about anyone else. The use of every sense in describing the cultures and people of this novel was really beautifully done. I definitely would love to see a graphic novel version of "Raybearer" just to see if my image of the characters and settings closely resembled what the author intended.

If you are looking for a fantasy read about colonisation, propaganda with a multi-cultural storyline whose customs and traditions are mainly rooted in the continent of Africa, this is definitely the read for you.

That being said I found no glaring issues with Raybearer, every plot twist was carefully executed, any romantic undertones were age-appropriate and the use of laws, culture and nursery rhymes to tell the story, left me so eager to read the sequel already.
