The Song Is You by Megan Abbott
3.0

Classic film noir tale featuring a reluctant detective--studio publicist Gil "Hop" Hopkins who's haunted by his brief connection to the disappearance of a starlet one night in the seediest parts of Hollywood. I do love that setting and Megan Abbott obviously does too. She obviously knows exactly what she's doing here in this world full of damaged people who just become more damaged by trying to escape to Hollywood. Every day is a horror movie, it seems, for just about every woman in the story trying to get the smallest something for themselves.

Hop himself is a mess. One that practically embodies the problem. He's drawn to and longs for people who've managed to not sully themselves too badly, but compulsively soils everybody just the same. The perfect guy to work as a studio fixer in the Eddie Mannix vein. I couldn't help but wonder what would happen to him when Hollywood hit the 60s and want to hear his thoughts on it.

Definitely going to try out more books by this author.
