The Bone Spindle by Leslie Vedder

4.0

update: 4/3/2023: I continue to enjoy this really action-packed and adventure-forward retelling of Sleeping Beauty (amongst other fairytales). I felt like the world building continues to be complex enough for a fantasy story yet easy to pick up and once again just a really fun piece of writing.

"The Bone Spindle" truly is a nonstop adventure and I really appreciated all the little nuances to this book. The dual POV only added layers to each character, there was a great deal of fighting against both villains and toxic masculinity. The pacing was swift but without feeling too rushed or like there were missing details, and speaking of details EVERY LITTLE THING in this book was described with ballpoint precision. The artifacts, curses, ancient ruins, food, everything!! It really made you feel like you were watching "Indiana Jones" run down an ancient temple with a giant boulder at his heels, you know what I mean?

This is a silly personal preference but I actually enjoy it more when there's no map at the beginning of the book so you have to picture the lay of the land as the author writes it. "The Bone Spindle"s adventure weaves worldbuilding in with the main plot really beautifully, and I enjoyed getting to know the Kingdom of Andar through Shane and Fi's lenses.

If you were looking for some good romance there's some GREAT sapphic mysterious-rivals-to-lovers-to-? and a beautiful heterosexual relationship that really emphasizes the importance of what it means to care about another person.

I noticed really early in how these retellings were crafted not just to focus around Sleeping Beauty but other notable fairytales as well (if you know, you know) and I am so excited to see more from this series!!
