Deep Trouble by R.L. Stine

3.0

 I recently got a bit of the nostalgia bug when thinking back to the Goosebumps books I read as a kid. Goosebumps, and by extension the Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark series, definitely introduced me to the genre of horror. After Goosebumps I moved onto classics like Dracula and Jekyll/Hyde, then on to the gown up stuff throughout my life and to this day. Well, this nostalgia bug got me wanting to re-collect the original 62 run of Goosebumps books, and in their first run printings because of the amazing covers. Perhaps the best part of the series was the covers. Next up;
#19, Deep Trouble
This entry in the Goosebumps series pulls a bit of a bait-and-switch on the reader. Perhaps it's because of the cover? Most Goosebumps books are of an eerie or dark nature (kid friendly that is), so the fear of the deep has its place in this story. There is even a scene depicting a shark encounter like the cover hints at. But what the book is actually about kind of comes out of nowhere.
Without spoiling things, I'll say that Deep Trouble is one of the books in the series that isn't at all kids' horror. It is kids' fantasy, or adventure. Almost like a Clive Cussler book, but for kids. Running with that, it's well-written with interesting characters and a moral dilemma that I'm sure is a good one for kids to ponder over. Just don't go into it expecting any of the signature spooky the books are famous for. More adventure/thriller than anything.
