THE IMMORTALITY CHIMERA
I read this book in a few days, after an entire year of not reading and while being at a mental low point that has been steadily approaching for months and it was exactly what I needed.
Obviously the main appeal of this book is all the fucked up, disgusting, abhorrent shit that happens. And it WAS very cathartic to read.
But what really stood out to me where the things I didnt expect. The commentary on neurodivergence, disability and socialisation was extremely relatable in a way I rarely see. The characters have been ostracized from society from the beginning, marked as Other, marked as weak. They deal with it in radically different ways, but the wayy they operate in society rang extremely true.
Something I often think about is the stagnation and regression that comes from Merging, comes from Incest. Insul is a character that has stagnated a long time ago, an overgrown school shooter, someone who outlived his story. Trianon doesnt have any solid identity, conforming to those around him, be it Society and Oenone or Darkness and Insul. As the story progresses Trianon is scared of solidifying into an identity, scared of the immortality chimera, scared of choosing one way or another.Towards the end of the novel one feels like he HAS to choose at some point, it all building towards that inevitable moment. But thats not what happens. Instead Trianon enters a state even more stagnant than the one he feared, trapping both Oenone and Insul with him, living in the cabin but keeping contact with society, merging with the shadow while still keeping his old life hostage. That merging of Trianon and Insul into one machinery, one organism, puts him in the same state that Insul has existed in for years, someone who outlived their natural end, someone who cant grow but cant die. I find it quite a beautiful ending, reflecting the pseuso-incestous fucked up triangle that Trianon and Insul created. Theyre merging and its an evolutionary dead-end and they want to stay that way. Yay❤️
