For Once in My Life
by Colleen Coleman
This IS a feel-good story. Almost too good. Right away, you sympathize with the protagonist, and want things to work out for her. But while some 'disasters' do occur, I wanted more to go wrong (or at least, for the protag to suffer and fight to get through it a little more). I did appreciate the protagonist's (and author's) philosophy about living life and taking chances, which the character does only come to realize through getting over truly deeply held fears. The writing fully convinces you of the character's passion for what she loves and wants, and her strong beliefs, although there were many sections of narration and internal opinions that went on for 6-8 pages, and could have been cut to 1-2 and still been convincing. (I found myself skimming several times). I felt the love interest character was a little too perfect, and would have liked to see more realistic negative reactions from him. I did like how things were 'made right' between the protagonist and other people in her life by the end, showing her growth. Overall, I would recommend this book and author, and I would enjoy reading more of her work.
