Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry by Joya Goffney

5.0

Firstly thank you to Hot Key Books for sending me a proof copy of Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry.
I really enjoyed this book, I found myself laughing, cringing, and crying with the characters.
Goffney's writing style is fresh and fun and I was fully able to immerse myself into the plot.
The story felt like a coming of age early 2000s film with the modern twist of 2021.
The characters- Quinn, Carter, Livvy, and Auden all click well together, and I enjoyed watching their friendships grow throughout the book.

In the reader's note at the beginning of the novel, Joya Goffney has written some extremely poignant sentences regarding whether we should risk safety for happiness and which of them is eventually more important to us.

Some characters in this book are racist towards Quinn, Livvy, and Carter (along with other characters) so please be aware of that.

If you are going to preorder any YA Contemporary literature this year, make sure it it Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry
