I have only read one other book by Zafon but it was very similar. There is a past and present plot and the city itself plays a major part in the story. It was still a very well written book but even the addition of fantastical elements didn't make it feel that different.

Also, making the female lead tragic and ill so that she dies at end just felt cheap and unnecessary. It reminds me of older authors where the youthful girlfriend dies so her pure memory can remain unspoiled.
