Where do you land on the hype train for Fourth Wing?

I picked this book up out of curiosity - did it really merit the hype? For me, the answer is mostly yes.

I'm a reluctant fantasy/fantasy romance reader - I get too in my head about the smallest details, word usage, and dialogue to enjoy the ride. However, I was able to overlook a lot of things I'd usually roll my eyes at when reading this book - mostly because I was so eager to see what would happen next!

Fourth Wing was fun and fast-paced to the last page. The first bit of action starts just twenty pages in, and the last page might just make your jaw drop and, for the first time in a long time, I was staying up past 3 am to read.

Our main character, Violence - sorry, "Violet" - is easy to like, and her kinda-sorta-maybe-enemy-but-not-enemy Xaden equally so. The supporting cast of characters are also great additions to the narrative - Liam & Andarna especially. Given the ending, I'm incredibly anxious to see how everyone's loyalties are tested in the sequel.

It's not a literary masterpiece, but the story is engaging and the world building is fairly robust while easy to follow. There are some moments where word usage was a little unfitting for the tone, in my opinion, but like I said it was easy to move past these bumps as events unfolded. Our main character definitely had main character privilege in some of the things she got away with/overcame, but it's easy to overlook because she's likeable and you want her to be victorious. Additionally, some moments were a tad predictable, but they were written in such a way that it remained an absorbing read.

Overall, this book was great.  I definitely see myself reading this one again - especially because its pacing makes for a quick read. My copy has page tabs everywhere from moments where I laughed, yelled in frustration, and one where I cried ... a lot ...

The best thing is that the sequel comes out in just over a month - and on my birthday no less! It may not need to be said, but I am definitely dipping into my PTO that day!

I just hope it hasn't ruined me for my other reads...
