A River of Golden Bones by A. K. Mulford
3.5
adventurous emotional medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes

I took a little while to warm to the story, but then I enjoyed it. It's a dark fairytale retelling, Sleeping Beauty with werewolves.

The main character's struggle with her identity and gender was well done and compelling, as was her slow realisation about the true responsibilities of a just and compassionate ruler.

It's a Romance with a capital "R", with a suitably smoldering love interest. The relationship development was okay, but he was a bit unbelievable as a person. You could have a pretty good drinking game for every time his eyes are described as "storming".

There's a lot of explicit sex, nothing wrong with that, but towards the end I found myself skipping through yet another sex scene, I found it a bit repetitive and tedious.

The stakes in the story are high - the main character is trying to overthrow an evil sorcerer and claim back her kingdom, and risks death to herself or her loved ones - but the story is actually relatively low tension as each threat is resolved fairly quickly and easily. So if you're looking for a cosy read, this will work for you, but if you're looking for a tense nailbiter, you may get frustrated.

So I think I'm not exactly the right audience for this book, but I still found it an enjoyable read over all.
