Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke
4.0
Well, that was an experience. And for the most part, Clarke makes it worth while. She’s an incredibly skilled humorist with a real knack for world building, and beyond that I appreciated her commitment to pastiche of Victorian-era literature. But I’d be lying if I said it didn’t drag at parts, and while I know that the magic in this story is in part meant to be nonsensical as a reflection of fairy logic, there were times where I felt so lost in the weeds of it that I lost sense of the stakes.
