i'm at a loss for words. this was beautiful and quite frankly unlike anything i've ever read before. it had echoes of to kill a mockingbird, but managed to be it's own independent story.

i saw a recommendation for this from the gospel coalition, and i'm so glad i decided to pick it up. there were so many lovable characters (jake deserves the whole world and so does karl). i loved how wonderfully quirky everyone was, and how nobody was just simple good or evil. they all felt painfully real, and i found myself so emotionally invested that i didn't want the book to ever end.

absolutely one of the most beautiful books i have ever read. <3

some minor complaints- the theology was a bit off, and i wasn't a huge fan of frank's emerging sexuality. it just felt kinda uncomfortable to be reading about his fascination with breasts.
