Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

4.0

“These pictures are my heart. And if my heart was a canvas, every square inch of it would be painted over with you.”

Wow I loved this so much! The world of shadowhunters has become second nature to me. I know the rules, I know the weapons, I know the demons, I know the plot. But Cassandra Clare always seems to impress me by expanding on this world and making new stories that don’t feel repetitive. The plot pretty much picks up right after City of Heavenly Fire following Emma Carstair and Julian Blackthorn. Five years later, Emma continues to track down the person who killed her parents during the Dark War, not caring what rules she breaks in the process.

As the world its self is nothing new, the characters are truly the best. I would even go as far to say that Emma and the entire Blackthorn family are tied with Will, Jem, and Tessa for favorite shadow hunter characters. The development I experienced with the blackthorn family was like no other. Clare was able to give each one of them something unique about them that makes them stand out from their siblings. Of course my favorite character in this book would have to go to Julian. His presence as not only a brother to his sibling but a father as well is outstanding. He loves them unconditionally, and THAT is admirable.

Usually Clare's male characters are the “hit first, ask questions later” type, but not this time. This time, it’s Emma and I love her for that. Move over Clary (even though it took you 6 books to impress me and Emma did it in 1) there’s a new bad bitch in town (Tessa doesn’t count she’s in a whole other league I love her).

As far as favorites go, this one, is definitely top 3. I would even say I liked it more than I did clockwork prince (I know, shocking). I would also like to make a side note that everytime Clare brings up London a little piece of me dies because I loved The Infernal Devices series.

A very solid start to the new trilogy and I can’t wait to read more about Julian and Emma. I even feel confident tackling 1000 pages in QoAaD.

If I had to number my top 3 it would be:

3. Clockwork Prince
2. Lady Midnight
1. Clockwork Princess
