The Garden Against Time: In Search Of A Common Paradise
by Olivia Laing
hopeful
informative
reflective
relaxing
slow-paced
This is not the sort of book I would have picked up if it wasn’t for my book club. I have been dipping my toe into non-fiction, but never gardening. I think this would've been a higher rating if I knew more about gardening and all the plants that come up!
This is like a walk through a garden. It’s relaxing and the descriptions are beautiful. The pacing is slow like a walk, though. Which is fine, but in some parts it is boring. I think this is particularly the case where there’s a tangent. I’m not one to criticise a tangent, but I do feel like there’s a loss of focus that makes the middle of this book harder to follow.
The end (the last couple of chapters or so) is the best part. The ideas that come through at that point pack a punch, and I found them to be the most interesting part.
It did also satiate some curiosity about the gardening in my home county. As the daughter of a man in to farming and gardening, I was aware the soil in East Anglia was poor, but knew little about it aside from this!
