I had not read the first book so I was a little confused by some of the jargon. But it's quite easy to figure out.
It seems like a good young adult book with lots of adventure but the characters are not as well drawn as I'd like. They have their peculiarities but there is no real interiority.
I really thought that this book was going to be different. I imagine some sort of orphanage of children with gifts (something perhaps like telepathy) but it turns out the characters are much more weird. I was hoping for something almost realistic or magical realistic but this is really a fantasy novel. So far this is little exploration of character. It is one "how do they get out of this" plot after another.
Jacob, who is the main protagonist and whose pov we inhabit, sounds like a 40 year old man. He is not believeable. Even the phone call with his father does not feel as touching as it should
However, for those who like adventure, there really isn't a dull moment. The reader gets quickly dragged from one unlikely-to-survive situation to the next.
I will not be reading the other books in this series
