The Cry of the Icemark
by Stuart Hill
DNF'ed at about 60% *Sigh* I wanted to like this book. I tried.
I would not call this a bad book. It was doing its thing, chugging along, being a fantasy story with a strong female lead and a third person omniscient narrator. That's fine, but it frankly just isn't what I look for any more.
I found this book boring. It lacked depth. It wove a yarn of a heroic teen girl leading armies into battle, but the action scenes were glossed over, the characters were fairly shallow and generally everything was just uninteresting to me. It may be be a fine book, but it wasn't a deep book, and I look for a little more in my fantasy these days.
The story seemed to meander around with no hurry to get anywhere and even when it was supposed to be tense... it wasn't. I never felt a single strong emotion while reading this and just couldn't bring myself to keep slogging through.
If you're in the mood for a more classic, 1970s-80s feeling fantasy, you might enjoy this one, but it did nothing for me.
