Captive of the Horde King
by Zoey Draven
3 ⭐️ For all you Game of Thrones fans, just imagine the Dothraki but on an alien planet
Summary:
Luna is a human on a planet ruled by the Dakkar, the native species. In exchange for inhabiting their planet, they must follow certain rules: they cannot leave their designated areas, they cannot kill or eat meat, and they must never burn the ground. But due to depleted rations from the Federation, humans are getting desperate.
Luna's younger brother ends up breaking one of these rules and unfortunately, the Dakkar horde king shows up demanding retribution. To save her brother and the village from the wrath of the Dakkar, Luna offers herself to serve the horde king in exchange for their safety. The horde king accepts this trade and takes Luna back to his people. But what Lana doesn't know is that her life is about to be changed for the better.
My Thoughts:
This is an entertaining sci-fi romance with some interesting horde dynamics, violence, smut, and of course a HEA. I enjoyed the story but wasn't necessarily blown away. However, as far as alien romance goes, it's definitely worth a read.
This story gave me Khalessi and Khal Drogo (from Game of Thrones) vibes. Thankfully, there are no r4pe scenes like in GOT, but Luna's struggle to be accepted into the horde and learning to love Arokan (the horde king) was very similar to Khalessi's. I didn't mind these similarities but I was distracted half the time because I kept comparing the two.
Luna was fine. I didn't hate her but I didn't really connect with her either. She was so ungrateful and stubborn towards Arokan at first that it drove me insane. The horde king should have killed her brother for what he did, but he didn't. Luna expected to be the horde king's whore but, instead, she becomes his wife and queen. So no she's not repeated r4ped or forced to be a slave as she expected. Instead, she lives a life of luxury with delicious food, beautiful clothes, and hot water, yet she constantly complains about her situation and wants to go back to her shitty village with people who didn't care about her. Luna did not appreciate how fortunate she was, and it took her FOREVER to come to this realization. But eventually, it does happen, and from that point on she was fine. I did like how she overcame certain fears, learned how to take care of herself, and opened her heart to love.
Most of the conflicts could have been resolved between Arokan and Luna immediately if he would have just explained the Dakkar lifestyle to her instead of expecting her to fall in line and do what she's told. This mentality didn't make sense to me because Arokan liked Luna immediately because she was strong, brave, and stubborn, but the moment she acted that way that went against the Dakkar way, he would get mad at her. Like, dude, she doesn't know anything about the Dakkar, which was mentioned a million times. Teach her your ways so she understands.
I liked Arokan because he's a brute but also a cinnamon roll towards Luna, However, I wanted more from him. I think it would have been amazing if we got some chapters in his POV.
I'm not going to lie, the anatomy of the Dakkar threw me off a bit. They basically look like humans except they have six claw-like fingers and toes, yellow irises with no white in their eyes, slitted nostrils, and a TAIL. I just don't get how claw-like fingers could possibly work for sexy time, ya know? Like someone please tell me how that works. And then the tail....I just kept imagining a rat tail or something. I felt like it was an unnecessary addition.
The smut was good. Nothing crazy, but the sex scenes were enjoyable and relatively graphic. But I actually enjoyed the sexual tensions and foreplay stuff better.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and I'm curious enough about this world to read the next book. I've only seen good reviews for it, so fingers crossed.
