Hunger
by Roxane Gay
This is a book that is difficult to read because of its disturbing content. The author describes how being gang raped affected her body image, and caused her to eat obsessively until she was super morbidly obese. I won't go into the exact figures but she was endangering her health. The story reminds me of the film "Precious" except that the author does not come from a welfare family. She is actually upper middle class and attended private school. Her parents just focus on her weight gain, and don't see to see there she has PTSD from the rape incident -- which they completely are in denial about. I applaud Roxanne Gay for having the cohones to write about rape and obesity.
