“As Eva talked, she transformed—her hands floating in the air, as if grabbing pieces of the story, he voice fluid, shape-shifting. Like she’d loved the stories herself.”
I enjoyed this book so much. I’m not going to lie the first couple of chapters threw me for a loop. I’ve had a few friends read this book and all told me how great it was and I just couldn’t get into it at first. But once I did, I didn’t put it down.
The characters in this book were so well-written and they all had me laughing out loud throughout the book. So much so that my husband said he will be reading it next. I absolutely fell in love with Eva’s daughter’s humor throughout the book. It was so lovely to see the different ways that Audre reflected Eva and her values. Eva and Shawn’s love was also just so strong and all-consuming. As a reader, I got sucked in and didn’t want the book to end.
One of the reasons I loved this book so much was the real-life issues that were addressed throughout the book. The nods to racism, white washing, generational trauma, etc. were so powerful and gave me, a white woman, a deeper understanding of the characters. Especially considering that the book does revolve around the weight of all the things that Eva is carrying.
Also, can we talk about the foreshadowing throughout the book and the references to their past together?! UGH 🤌🏻 DAMN IT WAS SO GOOD!
TW: drug use, addiction, death, self harm
