The Butterfly Effect by Jon Ronson
5.0

Made specifically for Audible this is more of an audio docuseries than a book, but I'm logging it here as an aide memoire. I'm always interested to learn what Jon is working on and this didn't disappoint.

I found myself listening to one episode directly after another, such was my curiosity as each episode shared a new story, each more intriguing than the last. I'm always amazed by how Jon manages to interview some of the key figures in his area of interest at any particular time and in this case he gained access to the creator of the free porn industry, Fabian Thylmann. He also interviews other stakeholders, such as porn directors, actors and consumers. He explores how some in the industry are diversifying into custom video creations, which was interesting as many of the examples given are only vaguely sexual in nature, focusing more so on childhood traumas in my opinion. The very significant impact that the widespread availability of free pornography on the lives of many, including former performers who did not anticipate that their work would be shared so widely, is evident. The children episode was understandably particularly saddening and disturbing.

I found the whole series weirdly fascinating and I loved how he tied everything together with the butterfly effect metaphor. Jon raises important questions including the impact of widely available pornography on our sexuality which merits broader discussion.
